I didn’t take any pictures today, but the weather hasn't been good for much except making time.

10-4-98

(9am (CDT)) I set my watch ahead. (Technically the change doesn’t happen until I am 100 miles or so down the road, but I might as well take care of that chore.)

I still have a bunch of zucchini bread that Miranda gave me for the trip, but I did stop at a truck stop and fill up the thermos and mug with coffee. (I don't know what I would do without caffeine. (I should probably find out, but that will have to wait for another day.))

(12pm) Wakeeney, Kansas 53,727 11.7 gallons

Gas and McDonald's burgers again.

I had forgotten what it was like driving down this stretch of road. (Being able to see rain storms 100 miles away is weird. (At first my reaction to the region was yech, but it does have its beauty.))

The other thing I had forgotten about was the wind. (It has been tossing my little truck around for miles now.)

Not much construction yet, but the speed limit took another downturn. (Montana's speed limit is "reasonable and prudent.", which I have defined as 80-85.)-(Wyoming and Colorado had 75 and Kansas is 70.) (Oh well, in this wind anything more wouldn't be prudent.)

(4pm) Topeka, Kansas 53,970 10 gallons

It started to rain about Salina and since Abilene it has been a downpour. (We say it rains in Montana, but this puts our storms down in the drizzle category.) (I have had the windshield wipers going full force and still the visibility was almost non-existent. (It reminds me of driving in a heavy snowstorm.))

(10pm) My dad and his wife seem to be doing well. (Tis good to see them well and happy. (Maybe I am just being selfish though. (Once things do start to go downhill, I will have to consider moving back. (It wouldn't be too bad, for awhile, but I would miss the mountains. (It would be nice to say I would miss the people, but I have been a hermit the past thirteen years, (almost fourteen now, I guess). (I would have about as much or more contact just writing letters. (I would say e-mail, but no one I know has that yet.)))))))

Another thing I had forgotten was the song of the crickets. (My dad hates it, but I have always enjoyed their song.)

10-5-98

(10pm) Pretty quiet day here. (Between their age and the limits of his wife's asthma, they live a pretty quiet life.)

It would be nice if they could travel more, but so many things mess her up that they are pretty limited in what they can do.
